The most important thing about being an exceptional talent, is being able to handle the fame.

Newspapers reported that Boyle ran down a corridor shouting, "I hate this show," ("Britons Got Talent") after her defeat and said she threw a cup of water on a floor manager who tried to calm her down.

When Susan Boyle first re-emerged, I found a link to a Daily Record.com article that had a sound tract containing a version of "Cry Me a River" taped by Boyle in 1999. It is the best rendition of that song I have ever heard since it was first recorded by Julie London in 1955.

The song, composed by Arthur Hamilton, is in itself a masterpiece and became an Internet sensation in the past two months thanks to Boyles' CD .......... so what happened?!

Listen to the sound track, and you'll ask the same question ..... She is a phenomenal songstress! why did she not become a superstar?!

She's a screwball, that's what happened! , ....... the industry does not need and will not tolerate temperamental Pre-Madonnas. She has probably acted this way in the past and cannot keep her promoters and agents interested in her.

So, the question that has been haunting me is answered.

Susan Boyle is not going anywhere.

Yea you're right. They have enough of those already.

Why must we gloat?

There are an awful lot of screwballs in show business. She probably still has an incredible shot at recording a hit CD. If they have any sense, they will turn the recording of the CD into a reality show.

I tend to agree there is something wrong here. Could be exhaustion, though. That's a pressure cooker.

Jerry, Diana Krall does the song justice, too, imho. ;-)

Thanks for the Link Ellie, that is a great rendition!

The song, by composer Arthur Hamilton was first performed by Julie London in the 1956 Jane Mansfield movie "The Girl Can't Help it." and it was a huge hit at that time. The song itself a masterpiece , it was written for Ella Fitzgerald in the 40's, and has since been performed by many artist including Peggy King, Mari Wilson, Barbara Striesand , and Ray Charles. Even Aerosmith took a crack at it.

David Gottfied seeded an article about Boyle on April 19th at which time I discovered Susan was cutting CD's 10 years ago, for charity or whatever. After hearing the professionalism in her 1999 production of "Cry Me a River", I posed the question, ".... where has she been for the past ten years? Why hasn't she been recorded since the charity tape? Is she unmanageable? her looks? inept promoters? "

Well, I suppose "unmanageable" may be the answer. However, it appears I have been a little harsh in my critixism of her, by calling her a "screwball", as Neenie points out in comment #3 on this thread. While she may be "unmanageable", the reasons behind her behavior are may be more involved than her critics realize. (Including me)

There might be a Simon factor involved; I think he'd make me twitch a little bit myself!

I do think Boyle would have done much better with Cry Me A River in the finals! Girlfriend can carry a torch(song).

I cannot understand why she has not used that song in this competition, especially for the finale.

Her handlers should have known about the success it has had on the 'net, had she used it she may have won.

BTW, being "runner-up" in an international competition such as "Britons Got Talent" is nothing to be ashamed of. She really didn't "lose" anything, she just didn't come in 1st.

Jerry,

Please, have you read anything about her background? Certainly she entered the contest willingly but she could not have anticipated the worldwide media circus that followed. She lives in a tiny town in Scotland. She's lived quite an isolated life. She was devoted to her mother and entered the contest as a tribute to her.

She does/did suffer from a learning disability and may or may not be 'socially' mature. That is no reason to label her a screwball or primadonna.

While not excusing her behavior, perhaps we could look at the reasons behind it rather than calling names or casting aspersions. As a mental health advocate I find the title of this article itself is distasteful. I noticed it is posted the the 'Open-Minded' group. Perhaps we could follow that philosophy.

Once again, Jerry finds himself extracting his foot from his mouth.

Thanks for the insight Neenie, I should have been more careful before judging her behavior. I did know about her caring for her mother from a comment posted by Britlassy in Gottfrieds seed, but I was not aware of her learning disability. (Now I feel bad)

If your information is correct (and I assume it is), we have to give her credit for coming as far as she has. I sincerely hope she can adjust to her new found fame and doesn't regress back to obscurity. She has a beautiful voice and and incredible talent that would be a shame for the world to loose because of insensitive critics. (like me for instance)

Do you think her behavior is any more bizarre than Britney Spears or Michael Jackson

That made me laugh! But, she's not a "child" star, so she does have less of that particular brand of baggage!

Apparently she has a different brand of baggage to carry. See neenie1991 comment #3

Actually, I thought WW was coming to Susan's defense. After all, hurling the F bomb at a paparazzi and denouncing the contest you just lost (when you were favored to win) are not that weird, imo. Especially compared to some of the nonsense we've seen out of real prima donnas.

It's a bit concerning that she seemed disoriented, but that could be exhaustion. As I said, I could only take Simon in small doses myself. Here's hoping she gets a good rest and a lucrative recording contract or stage engagement. Cheers, Susan!

NO ONE is more bizarre than Michael Jackson!

And, Britneys' superstardom has is past its peak. She's was just doing things to retain some limelight on the downside.

P.S. Per Neenie1991s comment #3; I have revised the title of this article.

Jerry,

I so did not want to make you feel badly, I'm sorry. I just saw her as being in the eye of this media storm, exhausted, probably not equipped to handle it (who would be) and just coming apart.

Whether she has an ongoing mental health issue or not remains to be seen, but I feel for her. I'm certain, based on her demeanor, the interviews I've seen and what her friends and community have said about her, she will be mortified by her actions, which is also saddening.

Neenie,

You didn't make me feel bad, I made me feel bad, when I realized my foot was in my mouth.

However, as I said in my sub-title "The most important thing about being an exceptional talent, is being able to handle the fame." It takes a lot of money to support a rising star in the entertainment world. The promoters and backers she will need to lauch a successful career are going to be reluctant to invest in someone that they think is not stable and able to handle the "media blitz" you refer to.

Her delicate emotional state is probably the reason she could not get backers when she cut the "...River" CD in '99. Now she is brought out of obscurity by this talent show and is a sensation, but the fears of her potential investors of 10 years ago hold true .... she will be too risky to back.

However unfortunately, that does not mean she will not be exploited. Some backers may agree to put some money behind her, let her become a success, then "crash and burn" from the pressure. They won't care, as long as they made a buck.

Your right, it's saddening.

Unfortunately, I think she may be considered all the more 'marketable' because of her potential volatility. Seems like the media and the public like nothing better than to build someone up only to tear them down. I wonder if she wouldn't have been better off staying in her small town with her friends, doing her work in church and having a pint while singing karaoke.

Promoters and agents don't like unpredictable, and volatile means unpredictable. There's too much talent out there that can handle fame and fortune, to take a risk on someone that obviously is a potential problem.

I watched her interview with Larry King today, and I personally, don't see Super Stardom in the cards for her. In the first place, she doesn't have the image needed for a broad fan base, secondly she isn't all that sharp, she would never survive the cutting interviews the tabloids and columnist would lay on her.

Show business, like politics, is a very tough world to survive in, she would never make it, actually it could possible destroy her.

Quick story; A few years ago my best friends girlfriend was studying music at Potsdam University in Upstate New York. She was an incredible jazz singer and pretty much worked her way through school by doing week end gigs in New York and Canada.

The first time I heard her perform was in Cornwall Canada on a New Years eve, and she blew me away ..... she was beautiful, dynamic and a fantastic singer. I wanted to call friends of mine in NYC and get her auditioned, I know they would have signed her immediately.

She would have nothing to do with it. When she was 17-18 years old, she toured, singing backgroud for the Duke Ellington Band and she said she did not want to live her life in that world. She had been offered contracts many times, but she had seen what being a star was like, that you have to be willing to devote your life, almost every minute of it, to your career. The pressure from your agents and promoters is overwhelming, not to mention the pressure the fans and the media put on you.

Today she is the retired head of a large High School music department. She still occasionally performs as a guest singer with various local Orchestras and Bands, including the West Point Military Academy Jazz Band, and she never for one minute regreted giving up what would likely have been a very successful singing career.

Your probably right, Susan would be better off just staying in her small town and avoiding the media. She could still cut a few CDs here and there and reap a fairly good income from them. For some people, fame and fortune is just not worth what it cost.
