"In villages of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, where there is no in-home running water, the rates for disease, such as pneumonia and meningitis among children, are about three times higher than they are than in other villages," said Dr. Jay Wenger, lead author of a new CDC study.

About 40 percent of households in the region lack water service, which could make it more difficult for people to wash their hands and prevent the spread of bacteria, said Dr. Rosalyn Singleton, immunization program director for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and a contributor to the report.

We tend to forget there are still many rural areas of America where people do not have the same quality of life the rest of us take for granted.

I would imagine that the 80% of Americans that live in urban America find this story quite surprising. I'm surprised, and I live in the very rural Adirondack Mountains of Northern New York State. However, as rural as it is around here, I don't know of anyone without indoor plumbing!

We have volunteer groups going to Central and South America and Africa to help the poor native villages obtain well water, why aren't those efforts spent on our own deprived areas?
