Middletown Conn. (Again) Around noon, a 17-year-old student was caught stealing a Jamaican pattie and was approached by officers Kurt Scrivo and school resource officer Alex Rodriguez, of the Middletown Police Department. When the two officers told the senior that he was under arrest and began placing handcuffs on him, he allegedly became violent.

Police said the student was "dry-stunned." Unlike a typical act of tasing, dry-stunning eliminates the use of projectiles. The Taser is held against the person's skin and is intended to cause pain without incapacitating the victim.

In the first place, I have a real problem with having cops in our schools. To me it is another symbol of the transition of our free society into a Fascist Police State.

I know you cringe when I say that, and think I'm talking radical nonsense. But I Graduated from High School in 1957, and believe me, if there were any cops in our school, it was because it was on fire.

Now......

Arrested and handcuffed in school for stealing a Pattie Cake from the Cafeteria?!!

What!! Is this IRAN??!!

Don't you people know what you doing to yourselves?! Allowing the police into your schools so they can arrest your kid for petty nonsense?! I mean, wouldn't a good tongue lashing from the school cook and being banned from the Cafeteria for a month be sufficient? For stealing a Pattie Cake?!!

If I ever got caught stealing food from the cafeteria, I wouldn't WANT to go back there for a month.

Of course in the fifties, it would never occur to anyone to steal food from the cafeteria. Because a temporary lapse of sanity like that would put you in the Principals office! Where you wait for your Mother!!

And when your Mother!! got her hands on you she would tell you about all the things that were going to happen at dinner time when you met up with your FATHER!!!! .

1.1 - The world is really not at all different than in history. More technology/science/medicine advances is all, and technology is permitted to be misused by criminals and dirty cops without prosecution, but by unlawful immunity to harm people. It is outrageous and unconscionable - to cause mainstream America and other nations to continuously live in a state of fear or concern for safety. However, the human mind remains the same as it has always been, unchanged except for additional information. Some process it well, others abuse that information to hurt other people.

What is most unfortunate are courts that release those who harm others with malice and allow dirty cops to beat up on teens, women, and the elderly. That is what is truly outrageous.

I do remember one day a student was arrested for having a 357 in his car

From looking at your column jtrain, i would assume you are a supporter of the 2nd amendment. (as am I) however, the NRA interpretation of the 2nd would allow the kid to posses the magnum.

The problem was the student resisting arrest

    You don't get it!

"The problem was ......." THE COPS IN THE SCHOOL!

Think about it, if you were a teen, and you got caught doing some stupid but petty thing, .... what would your reaction be if the cops moved in, arrested and attempted to cuff you in front of your peers?

    For boosting a Pattie Cake!!!

    (Give me a break)

      Take the tasers away.

Believe it or not police officers were able to apprehend suspects and restrain them sufficiently without the use of tasers in all of history prior to their recent use. Honest. Check me on it. True story. No joke. Really. In fact. Quite evidentiary.

Com'on ASM, you've been around here over 2 years, you should know if you want people to "check on you" , you need to provide links to support your position.

You may want to join the TaserWatch Group. They compile stories about the police overuse of tasers every day.

Also, check out my End Violence Against Women group, you will find the avatar interesting.

Besides the obvious overreaction of arresting the kid for stealing food (what happened to being sent to the principal's office?) why are they using a weapon designed to cause pain only? Doesn't incapacitate, just causes pain. Nice and sadistic. Glad my kid doesn't go there.

3 - well, if I have been "around here over 2 years" then I would recognize your handle. I do not. And I know everything - so why would anyone need to "check on" me for anything, ever? ;]

(kidding, in case you weren't sure)

And your "End Violence Against Women" page sure looks familiar...but that's ok in this case. :]

        reasonable patriot

Schools today do need some form of security, depending on the demographics for the particular area. But tasers being used for stealing lunch cart food and resisting? That is wrong! Tasers may be good to have around if something critical happens, like a student with a gun or riots, but this incident is ridiculous.

6 - There are plenty of adults in these schools. Can they not handle children anymore? Please. Children have not changed at all. But, the expectation of these children has changed by their parents to fend for themselves all day long into the evening hours from neglect...

Wait - nope - prior generations dealt with that too - and so did the teachers. Then it seems we have a soft generation of wimps that cannot effectively handle reasonable work. No wonder our children lack respect for authority - they have no authority in which to respect!

Yes I absolutely see your point. These kids see police activities going on in their schools and adults who handle small issues with brute force. No wonder the kids have a hard time with authority.
