Santorum: I made Medicare 'mistake'

Former Pennsylvania Sen. and (likely) Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum says he should have voted no on the Medicare prescription drug bill in 2003.

"I would say that that was a mistake," Santorum told "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace when asked about Medicare D, which adds abut $60 billion to the deficit per year.

"I voted for it for a lot of reasons. ... I think we should have paid for it, that was not an option on the table at the time I voted for it," Santorum said. "It was a 51-49 vote. In retrospect, it should have been a 51-49 vote the other way."

Santorum, a darling of social conservatives who might have trouble raising enough cash to compete for the GOP presidential nomination, says he'll decide on a run over the next several weeks.

That's the entire article, no need to use the link unless you want to read the Politico comment thread.

Rick Santorum is just a political hack that is trying to repair the damage he created for himself with the Tea party.

Santorum is a political "Loser". He is just one more "Fox News Contributor" that lives in the GOP echo chamber that thinks he is on message and in tune with the American voter.

I'd much prefer Santorum trying taking on the pharmacy companies for exorbitant pricing, restraint of trade ( long story, but essentially making it so when a drug goes generic, the smaller companies can't produce it cheaper), & the largest lobbying group in D.C.

I lived in Pa. when he was a Senator; I have NO use for him.

It's simple..... their morals are very narrowly focused.

But we're talking about Rick Santorum here, what morals could you be referring to?

I think the Republicans have always intended that nothing they say should ever be believed as a "factual statement", Jon Kyl just made it official.

I think many Republicans will see "Jesus" and start saying they will do everything to protect medicare and social security. Just wait and see after they all toss their hats in the ring one will be against all the social cutting plans and gobble up the independent and some Republican votes...and hopefully grab the GOP nod.
But we know that we can trust them when he says he'd do anything to stop the cuts in the popular programs...but we know what we can expect...more cuts.

Thanks, but I beg to differ with you Missouri, if I held that the summary was my own composition, and/or did not accredited Politico and provided a link to the original article, you would be correct.

The article is so short, a summary would would have covered most of the article context, so I posted the entire text with a notation.

I will however take your advice and opinion under advisement, and email NV admin for clarification.

I got one, and it was real fast!

Your right! I can't do what I did.

I received the following email from Viki Gonia today.

"She's right. You can't copy and paste the entire article, even if it is very short. Part of the purpose of that is to ensure that the person who wrote the article you're seeding, as well as the source from which you're seeding, receive the page hits and revenue they deserve for posting the article, which you also circumvented by telling people they had no need to actually go to the seed."

So, .... in the future, short articles will get shorter summaries.

Thanks for the heads up.

Look like if it was for the individual he voted against it if it was for the benefit of the big companies he voted for it.

Exactly. Cuz everybody knew this was a bull@!$%# bill and Republican leadership rammed it through. Recall that this was the bill in the House that needed to have the voting kept open for several hours so the R leadership could bribe, threaten and intimidate a few of its own members to squeak through. It's testimony to what a p.o.s. this legislation was that Republicans didn't march in their usual lock-step discipline on it.

I lean mostly toward the liberal side, but still don't believe the problems are entirely one-sided. For example, Social Security was necessary, but the availablility was gradually loosened up and used to buy votes. Of course, today no conserv could never admit that the program falls under that dreaded "spending" moniker. And it is the biggest total of the spending.

Chris Wallace is a shamless 'pub-sucking hack.

Rick Santorum has said some incredibly hateful, ignorant and demeaning things about homosexuals and non-Christians.

In fact, his publicly-voiced views on these issues have pretty much defined Santorum over the past few years.

Did Wallace give it the slightest mention yesterday on Fox Sunday? Hell no. Bunch of softballs to make Rick seem like a normal, socially-sane person who just wants to talk about the budget.

The sh*t that Republicans are putting forth in the name of "budget concerns" is sickening and about as anti-American as you can get.

The GOP created the huge deficit they handed over after 8 years under the Bush administration and now we have one politician admitting they created it.

It was the GOP who took the Clinton balanced budget and did exactly what Santorum is admitting, the GOP spent it on ridiculous bills that even now Santorum admits was wrong.

The GOP just supported anything Bush wanted even if it was the wrong thing to do.

Santorum is only admitting what most GOP politicians don't have the courage to admit.

The GOP sent the country downward with their spending, leaving the deficit for someone else to deal with.

Yet Santorum now admits this, but still blames the current administration for the mistakes the GOP made.

If it were not for Part D my wife and I could not afford our medication. The major mistake about it was in not allowing negotiations with the pharmacy companies. The cost could probably be cut by at least a third, and maybe by half if Medicare were permitted to negotiate for lower prices.

He did not make a mistake in voting for it. The mistake should be and must be shouldered by the present administration. The bill's intention is good. The bill's intent and purpose is clearly identified.

The administration made a mockery of the bill's intent by making compromises and revisions that made that intent a waste of time and energy. They made it such that the bill is not implementable in it's present state without incurring substantial loss. It is the administrations job to make sure that the bill can be initiated and then implemented to attain an efficient and financially stable grounds. They miserably failed to do this. The Neville Chamberlain of the United States, the great compromiser had seen to that. He made himself look good by having the bill passed even knowing that by doing so in it's present state it was nothing but a smoke that can dissipate once enough air is blown into it.

Santorum did not make a mistake. However his comments now shows he himself does not understand what he is signing for and for a legislator it shows incompetent performance with an effort to hide his mistake by declaring he should have done otherwise.

There is nothing innocent about his vote. He failed the people. There is no accidental mistake in failing people. You either care about people and their needs --or you don't. He proved he didn't and his backpeddling now doesn't correct it or remove why he made his egregious error in the first place.
For once, I'd love to see you Repug supporters stand up and say hell yes, they/he/she was/were wrong. Even when they/he/she admits it.
