We've got huge problems with money and debt in this country right now.

Unemployment is still relatively high with good paying jobs continuing to be scarce.

The housing market is still terrible. Home values are down on the year and a record number of properties are in foreclosure.

Banks now own 872,000 homes, according to the New York Times. That's twice as many as in 2007. And they are in the process of foreclosing on about a million more. Scary stuff.

"In a separate poll of kids aged 12 to 17 conducted by Junior Achievement and the Allstate Foundation, only 7 percent think they will be worse off financially than their parents.... 89 percent think they will be the same or better off."

Do you share that optimism?

YES. If the we stop all the B.S. that is being fed to us 24/7 days a week by all the right wing news media nuts. And solve the problem that we are in today.

Bob Nelson.

Upward mobility is was never as great as Americans believed... and has declined significantly over the last few decades.

Upward mobility is now much greater in most other developed countries...

Afraid not. I doubt the younger generation will do as well as their parents did. I managed to do a little better than my parents. But I pretty much think that will not happen with the younger generation. Too bad, really. But we have no one to blame but ourselves, collectively. We elected the politicians who have sold this country's middle class to India and China. JMO, of course.

Yes this generation has a chance at the Great American Dream.

We will have to elect a majority of Democrats to the House of Represenatives and elect a minimum of 60 Democratic Senators to the Senate. We will need a Democrat in the White House. We need 21st century leadership.

We need to rejoin the 21st century technological revolution to compete with China, India, and the European Union. As we rejoin the technological revolution we need to bring our manufacturing jobs home. We need to spend money on science and engineering to stay ahead of the curve. Greed will only get us a reissue of money leaving the rich as poor as the poor are now.

Ocark, I certainly hope that this generation can acheive the Great American Dream. I only have one problem with your post. I think we need to "set the standard for the 21st century".

Hi DS12

I think we need to "set the standard for the 21st century".

Absolutely, 100%.

They will not if the current generation keeps spending their money with absurd levels of debt and devaluing the USD in the process.

As long as we restore a positive Democratic government we have a shot. If the Republican slime stay in office we are going to have to rethink what that ideal is possible to be. We push our kids to work hard, study and make good grades and for what. There are thousands of 4 year grads that can't get work.

Do you honestly believe the solution to our problems is to keep a particular political party in power? BTW, it does not matter which one - I would object to your logic regardless of party choice.

Going beyond logic and into fact. The Republican 'slime' are not 'in power' and have been largely out of power since 2006. The R party just now regained the House in the current Congress. The D party has the rest and even had the House. So what is the problem?

I'd have to say no...and I wish I could provide a different answer.

Ironically, in light of several of the comments above, I would place much of the blame on the Left, Liberals, the Welfare State, and the introduction of "hate America" first politics. This would seem to paint a target on the Democrats. Although I do blame them, I certainly don't absolve Republicans from their share of the blame. The fork in the road has arrived, and the nation must decide which route to take. If we choose the Left Fork there is no hope.

The next generation probably has a shot at some sort of a dream, just like every other generation has had. More and more will miss the mark though, if for no other reason than there are always more failures than successes. Too many people trying for a limited number of brass rings.
