The family of a 10-year-old found dead in a trunk outside an Arizona home initially claimed the child died while playing hide-and-seek. But investigators now believe Ame Deal suffocated after her family locked her in the box because she took a popsicle from the freezer without permission.

Phoenix police claim Deal's grandmother, aunt and two cousins regularly subjected the child to horrific treatment, ultimately culminating in her July 12 death. [Read more]

I'll be happy to see all of them in prison for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, it appears that the courts rarely give maximum sentences when people kill kids.

People who kill kids barely get a tap on the wrist, because our laws reflect our values with regard to our children.

Most people who kill kids aren't charged with murder.

I'm sure it was not intentional murder, and as such should not merit life in prison or the death penalty as some would prescribe. But for gods sake, keep these people away from children for the rest of their natural lives. And get the other children in the extended family counseling and place their parents through fitness evaluations. People who could let this go on can not be fit to associate with developing young minds.

Actually it was on purpose - they locked her in a bin? Seems to be on purpose to me. What happened to stand in the corner?

Who the @!$%# cares if it was intentional?! What they did to that poor girl while she was alive was every bit as bad as her death! Honestly!

It's hard to believe how many stories like this, and worse, are seeded to Newsvine's Child Abuse & Abductions group ....... every day!

And that is just what the 188 members of our group pick up. A report by the National Center for Child Death Review states;

"It is reported that more than 2,000 children in the U.S. die of child abuse and neglect each year, and the actual number of abuse and neglect deaths is estimated to be much higher than that reported by vital statistics data."

The report goes on to say; National statistics show that children under six years of age account for 86% of all maltreatment deaths and infants account for 43% of these deaths. Fathers and mothers’ boyfriends are most often the perpetrators in the abuse deaths; Read more

Most Americans believe that children need to be in physical pain, be physically tortured to be disciplined. That thinking leads to this type of act. Routinely. You can not educate people who believe children are chattel to treat as they wish. Believe me, I've tried. I was on a thread not long ago where a two year old was beaten to the point where marks were left on his body two days after the fact. The seeder and countless viners sided with the abuser. That's typical of the average American. Our laws protect abusers.

Sadly, I don't see a time coming where a two year old baby is given the same bodily protection under the law as a 250lb man. In our family, discipline was about teaching and guiding, not the infliction of pain. I am so thankful for my parents who were adult enough to not assault is under the guise of discipline.

I've been a child advocate speaking for abused children for a long time. Why don't you try it - spend time in those court rooms and educate yourself on our view when it comes to beating children. The fact that we are the only developednation who still have our government employees beating children with two foot wooden boardsin many public schools, speaks volumes.

It's clear from your post you have NO experience in this area. Abused children are returned to their abusers time and time again, because the abusers rights trump the rights of the child victim routinely. If abused women were forced back to their abusers at the rate children are, I would hope there would be a public outcry. In the case of children, the public often sides with the abuser.

I also see the child returned to the abusers with a slap on the wrist. I also see children torn from a less than ideal situation and the damage that does. This is an incredible problem facing our country. To many abused and neglected children and not enough social workers to monitor the situation because we sure don't want to raise taxes a couple of dollars or take away someones tax credit for personal jets.

I may have mistaken your post, but I think you're an idiot, with all due respect. If any respect is due, after such a statement.

As far as I can tell, absolutely no respect should be given to you. 1devon gave his opinion, if you disagree then feel free to give an opposing argument. But as it stands your post is very hypocritical.

Sorry man. My fault. I don't like it when people imply that the average American supports these people. I would love to read a link to the story about the beaten two year old, where most of the posters sided with the abusers. Could you please provide a link, devon?

The average American finds this kind of thing deplorable, and I think that it is completely offbased to suggest otherwise. What of her personal attack against me, an average American, and the implication that I, or any other average American, actually support these people? That's what I found to be idiotic, but I know I should have controlled myself a little better. My apologies to both you, and devon. Honestly.

I disagree vehemently with your appeal to emotion, devon. Specifically the part where you claim the average American sides with abusers in cases like this. Casey Anthony can't even leave her house without protection.

I can tell you being a resident of Arizona this story is sadly not surprising, these adults are just another example of the white trash that live in this state. How someone could torture and murder a child is beyond me. I am opposed to the death penalty but the adults who are responsible for her death deserve nothing less then life imprisonment.

I'm sure you aren't including yourself among the white trash in that state are you? And what do you call all those that murder children in the other 49 states?

devon, can you post where it has been ever been proven that "most" Americans believe that children need to be in physical pain. Or is that just something you think most Americans believe.

Being white does not make one trash being ignorant and hateful makes one trash and Arizona has a lot of ignorant and hateful people and most of them are white. What do I call them, trash.

Witnesses told investigators the child was regularly punished by being locked in the trunk. They also saw the caregivers force Deal to eat dog feces as punishment, crush cans barefoot and exercise outdoors in "extreme measures,"

There is really no excuse that could justify leaving the child in their care while this sort of thing went on.
