A 21-year-old man died after a Fort Myers police officer shot him in the back at point-blank range while he lay on the ground, a witness said she told investigators Friday.
Sherita Jackson, who lives at the apartment complex where Starling Javier died, said she told Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigators she watched Javier fall to the ground in her parking lot, his gun a few feet away. Then an officer approached Javier and shot him in the right side of his back, she said.
Police said Thursday they were chasing Javier following a call about shots fired at a Metro Parkway apartment complex. They chased Javier to Central Avenue and Canal Street, where they said he fired at them as they ran after him near the Sunrise Towers apartments. Read more;
