Scott Olsen, a protester who’s done two tours of duty in Iraq and is now involved in Veterans For Peace, was critically wounded during an Oakland police raid by police projectiles.
When people tried to help him, an officer lobbed a flash bang grenade right into their group. Olsen is currently hospitalized with serious injuries and is reported to be in critical condition

There is no question in my mind that these protest are going to evolve into full fledged riots.

And, there is also no question in my mind that the police are going to be the instigators.

I'm equally sure that the police are going to instigate the protesters into defending themselves, then arresting those protesters for "attacking" them.

We're going to see the increased police brutality that is currently being investigate by the DOJ in 11 major cities, erupt into really nasty confrontations and bloodshed.

This unrest has been brewing for a long time, the people are fed up with their government, and the cops have plenty of rogues among themselves that routinely treat detainees with excessive force.

It's gonna be a mess, and the GOP is going to do all they can to make it as bad as they possibly can. A President running for re-election with the people rioting in the streets, is definitely at a disadvantage.

I agree and this is where cameras will help. Cameras were not so avail during the Civil Rights Movement. Notice there are no reporters taking in the story and its photographs. I guess the people will have to report their own story in placed like the Vine as Jerry has done. The technology they use to survey and watch the people is the same technology that can be used to police the police.

Our soldiers fight for the rights of others but, they have no rights?

Jerry, it's gotten to the point, I don't even try to stand up for the cops anymore. I agree, wholeheartedly with what you've said. It seems that the GOP is pushing for this, but I sure there are going to be those that will put it on the protesters.

But you have to admit, peaceful protesters are harder to arrest, and justify it, as oppose to those who are fighting. Yeah, it's going to be a mess, and I wouldn't wait for the GOP to own up to anything.

This is not the first time this has happened in dealing with the Oakland police. This will be another lost lawsuit for Oakland police.

OAKLAND / Agreement reached on crowd-control tactics

Oakland police will no longer indiscriminately use wooden or rubber bullets, Taser stun guns, pepper spray and motorcycles to break up crowds, under an agreement announced Friday.

The changes followed criticism and lawsuits against police for their tactics at a large demonstration against the Iraq war outside the Port of Oakland on April 7, 2003.

The new policy settles part of a federal class-action lawsuit filed by 52 people who claimed their First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and assembly were violated as they targeted two shipping companies with contracts tied to the war in Iraq.

"What we've done is create a comprehensive policy that really provides a much more sensible, reasoned approach to managing demonstrations and crowds," said Rachel Lederman of the National Lawyers Guild in San Francisco.
