A Rally was held Midtown Sacramento as an evening of remembrance, celebration, and action to stand against all forms of violence against women and children. A project of the Northern California Association for Women "Take Back the Night"
This article is actually from a comment I made on seed about a mother that came home to her luxurious apartment in the exclusive Upper West Side of Manhattan and found her two children stabbed and bloodied in the bathtub. Murdered by their Nanny who was laying nearby, critically injured from self inflicted wounds.
Now, people who live in the Upper West Side of Manhattan do not hire Nannies off the street. Nor do they take in their sister-in-laws cousin to watch over their children. They go to a reputable service agency and hire professional Nannies that have been screened. I'm sure this woman felt she was entitled to a reasonable expectation of safety for herself and and especially for her children, a 1 year old boy and a 6 year old girl. I mean, it doesn't get much better than Manhattans' Upper West Side, especially for a city dweller. Read story;
So how safe are we in America, not from foreign terrorist, but from ourselves? This is not an article about guns, that's another story. But the fact is we killed over 10,000 of ourselves by gunfire last year, over 10,000 of us are killed by gunfire every year. That figure, which is 1,000 times higher than any other developed country in the world, should be no surprise to anyone, after all we do have over 300,000,000 (that's 300 MILLION) guns floating around in this country. In 2008 Japan had ...... 11, not 11 thousand, eleven people killed by gunfire, ....a bad year, in 2006 they had 1 that's right one (1). They accomplished that feat by properly controlling the guns in their country.
I know, I know, ...the the Upper West Side children were stabbed! (got a couple of 2nd amend guys, getting' all crazy) As I said I don't want this to be about guns, but when I'm talking about feeling safe in this country, it's hard to keep from thinking about those 300 million guns.
I think the problem is, Americans only want to focus on how good we think we are, and we don't realize all the important things we have neglected, such as education and mental health, which has left us all in position where we can no longer have a reasonable expectation of safety ....... anywhere ...... any time.
We are all endangered at all times, there are dangerous mentally unbalanced people among us ...... everywhere. Working next you at your job, standing behind you at a convince store check out, even police officers have been using their weapons in increasing numbers, shooting and killing innocent drivers and other detainees for ridicules reasons. Go to the Newsvine groups, Official Abuse & Misconduct and Police Brutality & Impropriety you will find so many stories about rogue cops you won't want to leave your house.
Watch this video: An old, partially deaf American Indian woodcarver, crosses the street in front of a police car on a sunny afternoon in Seattle Washington. Twenty seconds later he's dead, shot 5 times by the cop. The cop, seeing the knife open on a public street, exits his car and moves out of view around the corner, ...... you will hear him say, "Hey, hey, put the knife down,..... put the knife down".
The clock on the police dash cam shows the cop yelled his first "Hey" at 1 min 6 seconds, then at 1 min 13 seconds the first of 5 rapid fire shots rings out. SEVEN (7) SECONDS! Seven seconds it took the cop to decide kill an innocent man. The woodcarver was 6 feet from the cop, and he was shot in the side, witnesses say the man was just turning to see who was calling him, when he was murdered by this cop, Ian Birk.
Birk was not prosecuted for this murder, the DA said he did not feel he could get a conviction because the cop showed no "malice" toward the woodcarver. That opinion came in exchange for Birk resigning from the force.
We can no longer enjoy any reasonable expectation of safety in America ..... not even from those that have vowed to keep us safe.
